In the first of a multi-episode series exploring the life of Paraguayan artist Feliciano Centurión, writer Devan Díaz explains her immediate connection to Centurión while researching the artist’s archives in the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA) Library and Archives. Beginning with his early life and the maternal teachings of his mother and grandmother, Díaz connects Centurión’s embrace of traditional women’s work in embroidery and needlepoint, kitsch, and the censorship of women and gay artists from the art history canon and institutions.
