Colóquios CBPF – Fundamental questions in the foundations of physics | 10/09/24

Sobre o tema:

This talk will focus on three types of questions concerning the foundations of physics. The first kind of question is about how to arrive at a consistent picture behind the application of the theoretical apparatus of current physics, or what Paul Dirac called “class one difficulties”. The second concerns the completeness, scope and limits of current physical theory, which Dirac called “class two difficulties”. Finally, there are a third type of question on the relation between consciousness and physical reality. These distinctions suggests that the idea of a “blind spot”, or a systematic and deep problem at the foundation of physics, dependent on the nature of subjectivity, might be inadequately posed. It might be better to understand blind-spot issues as involving a set of problems, each with independent difficulties that concern the foundations of physics. Several illustrations of these problems will be provided, including time, measurement, aesthetic beauty, and the foundations of mathematics.
